Bradford City 0 – Swindon Town 0

Champions Swindon were forced to settle for a goalless draw against The Bantams on the final day of the npower League Two campaign. City enjoyed the lion’s share of the play and, with more decisive finishing, they would have ended their own disappointing season with a deserved win. Visiting keeper Wes Fotheringham did well to save a shot from Nahki Wells in first-half stoppage time, after James Hanson had flicked the ball into his path, and Wells had two more chances in the second half – both provided by Hanson.

First, he saw his shot blocked in the 50th minute and then shot wide of the far post 10 minutes later. However, City’s best chance fell to David Syers in the 67th minute. Will Atkinson played him through on goal, but his shot lacked power and Fotheringham saved. Swindon, who were second best for most of the match, finished strongly, but the nearest they came to scoring was when Jon McLaughlin turned skipper Paul Caddis’ 20-yard free-kick over the crossbar before striker Paul Benson fired into the side-netting.

Mark Lawn on David Syers not signing new contract offer

City joint-chairman Mark Lawn told the T&A: “David has a choice now. We offered him a contract, which we believe is a good one, and he hasn’t chosen to sign it. I’m flabbergasted he hasn’t taken it but what can we do?” We offered him a very good contract which he didn’t take. But we certainly haven’t withdrawn it.”

“It was way back when he first got back in the team. We sat down and I explained to him how much I want him to be part of it here. I tried to be fair to him because he’d just recovered from a long-term injury and obviously you have concerns when you’re in that position. We haven’t spoken about it since then. But Dave’s out of contract and he’s got every right to see what’s out there.”

Parkinson on the Cheltenham Town defeat

The City boss said: “It was a game of two halves because in the first half we were very good and we could have scored more. We hit the post, had numerous other chances to extend our lead. Cheltenham were always going to come out fighting in the second half and up their game.”

“We stopped winning headers at the back, stopped squeezing up as a back four and we weren’t compact as a team, allowing them far too much space all over the pitch. It’s a shame because in the first half we were so good. We came up short in the second period and didn’t compete as we should’ve done.”

Cheltenham Town 3 – Bradford City 1

Cheltenham booked their place in the League Two play-offs hitting back from a goal down to see off The Bantams 3-1 at the Abbey Business Stadium. Nahki Wells put City ahead in the eighth minute with a fine low finish and only a string of saves from home goalkeeper Scott Brown kept the score down before a remarkable second-half turnaround.

Substitute Kaid Mohamed created Jimmy Spencer’s first with a run and cross down the left to level the scores less than a minute after the restart. Brown made a flying save to keep out James Hanson’s drive as City almost regained their advantage in the 47th minute, but after that it was all Cheltenham. Luke Summerfield’s pass set up Spencer for a well taken second in the 63rd minute, the on-loan Huddersfield striker curling a shot into the top right corner. And Ben Burgess sealed Cheltenham’s third home victory in succession with a deft finish after Sido Jombati picked him out with a long ball in the 71st minute.

Also yesterday the club announced that Michael Flynn and Chris Mitchell have now left the football club by mutual consent. The duo’s contracts were both due to expire in the summer but the pair will now leave Valley Parade with immediate effect. Craig Fagan is apparently in the process of settling the remainder of his own contract with the football club and this is why he didn’t play yesterday.

Parkinson on the Macclesfield Town victory

The City boss said: “Guy Branston has been tremendous, Luke Oliver has carried on where he left off after serving his three-match suspension. We have made it difficult for teams to come here. Macclesfield came here fighting for their lives. You except they are going to be very strong and very solid and we had to deal with that and grind out a result. For a manager to see his team grind out a 1-0 win is not a pretty sight, but we were the better side in the first half and in the second we had more pressure and deserved our goal.”

Bradford City 1 – Macclesfield Town 0

A second-half goal by leading scorer James Hanson earned City the 1-0 win that ensured their Football League survival and left Macclesfield still three points adrift of safety with only two matches left. After a first half of plenty of endeavour but few goal-scoring chances, Hanson broke the deadlock with a close-range header which appeared to take a deflection off Ben Mills after Craig Fagan’s free-kick found him unmarked at the far post. It was Hanson’s 14th league and cup goal of the season.

Nahki Wells, who scored a hat-trick in City’s 3-1 win at Northampton last week, twice went close to scoring before he was booked for an apparent dive after Portuguese keeper Jose Veiga saved at his feet – an incident that also earned Veiga a yellow card. Substitute Deane Smalley and skipper Ricky Ravenhill also went close to adding to City’s lead, Veiga diving at Ravenhill’s feet while Smalley saw his 20-yard shot deflected for a corner in stoppage time. The visitors put the Bantams defence under pressure at times, but keeper Matt Duke had few direct shots to save.

After nearly 4 months off I’ve decided to start updating the website again.

Charlie Taylor signs on loan from Leeds United

Bradford City have signed left-sided player Charlie Taylor on a month-long loan spell from neighbours Leeds United. The 18-year-old defender or midfielder has made three appearances for Leeds in all competitions, all this season. He made his professional debut against the Bantams in August, coming on as an 89th-minute substitute in United’s 3-2 Carling Cup win.

Phil Parkinson said: “I’ve watched Charlie a few times for Leeds reserves and he’s a good addition. With Reidy (Kyel Reid) being out, it gives us some fresh legs.”

Bradford City 3 – Shrewsbury Town 1

City stunned high-flying Shrewsbury 3-1 to secure their third consecutive win in npower League Two. The Bantams cruised past their fourth-placed guests with goals from James Hanson, Nahki Wells and Craig Fagan to extend their unbeaten league run to five matches. The Shrews grabbed a late consolation through Marvin Morgan, his ninth of the season, after City had David Syers sent off for a professional foul, but the hosts were comfortable in victory.

Hanson handed the Bantams the lead after 24 minutes. The striker rose highest to nod Andrew Davies` cross beyond Chris Neal in the Shrews` goal to register his ninth goal of the campaign. And the home side doubled their lead five minutes later when Bermudan international Wells buried the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net with a left-footed shot from the edge of the area. Fagan`s 12-yard volley effectively killed the game off four minutes after half-time and, although Syers received his marching orders with 20 minutes remaining following a foul on Nicky Wroe, all Shrewsbury could muster with the man advantage was Morgan`s volleyed effort after 78 minutes.

CITY: McLaughlin, Ramsden, Oliver, Jones, Hanson, Compton (Bullock 73), Wells (Hannah 68)(Threlfall 90), Syers, Seip, Davies, Fagan. Subs not used: Bryan, Duke

Andrew Davies to stay with Bantams until end of season

Premier League side Stoke City have agreed to allow defender Andrew Davies to remain with Bradford City for the remainder of the current season. Davies’ current loan deal from Stoke was due to expire after next Saturday’s F.A Cup 3rd round tie with Championship side Watford.

The former Middlesbrough and Southampton central defender had a dreadful start to his City career by being harshly sent off in consecutive games. But he has gone on to play a key role in the Bantams revival in recent weeks and has featured in the side that has recorded three clean sheets in our last four league games.

Phil Parkinson told the club website: “We have a deal in place with Stoke for Andrew to stay until the end of the season, so we are really pleased with that. Andrew has been a key player for us and a key character in the dressing room as well. He was on the wrong end of a couple of harsh red cards at the start of his time here but he didn’t go back to Stoke during his suspensions, he stuck around with the lads and played his part on the training ground and in the dressing room. Since he’s been back in the team, he’s been very, very good.”
