Parkinson on the Plymouth Argyle draw

Parkinson said: “We responded well after going behind and showed a lot of character to come back into the game. It was a setback to go behind but the players showed great determination, saying to themselves We are not going to lose this game.”

“It was a great cross by Kyel Reid and a fantastic finish for the equaliser by the big man, James Hanson. Big players score important goals and he scored one. In the end, we are disappointed not to win the game. We then had three great chances to take all three points. We can do better than that with those sort of chances – we’ve got to make the ‘keeper make the save.”

Bradford City 1 – Plymouth Argyle 1

James Hanson salvaged a late point for City against fellow strugglers Plymouth, who climbed off the bottom of the Football League following the 1-1 draw at Valley Parade. There were just five minutes of normal time remaining when Hanson levelled to hand us a share of the points to keep them three points off bottom spot, which is now occupied by Dagenham & Redbridge.

The Bantams dominated the first half but the nearest they came to scoring was a minute before the break when skipper Michael Flynn saw his shot cleared off the line by defender Darren Purse with keeper Jake Cole beaten. Plymouth went in front in the 59th minute from their first corner of the game. The home defence failed to clear Will Atkinson`s flag-kick and skipper Simon Walton’s 15-yard shot was deflected into the net by Craig Sutherland.

The Bantams pressed hard for an equaliser and their pressure paid off in the 85th minute when Kyel Reid delivered a low cross from the left and Hanson scored with a superbly-taken left-footed shot just inside the near post. Flynn and Ricky Ravenhill missed good chances to win the game for the home side in the closing stages as Plymouth were reduced to 10 men when Onismor Bhasera was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Davies wants Bradford City response

Andrew Davies has called on his team-mates to avoid a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy influence hangover this weekend when they take on Plymouth Argyle. City lost the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Area semi-final to Oldham Athletic on Tuesday evening, ending the possibility for a trip to Wembley for Phil Parkinson’s men this season.

There is no time for the Bantams – who were once involved in EPL betting don’t forget – to feel sorry for themselves though as they get ready to take on bottom of the table Plymouth Argyle this weekend. Only three points separate the duo, so this is a massive match in City’s season and Davies is determined to ensure that he and his team respond to the Oldham defeat in the best possible way.

He said: “I don’t think anyone would be down anyway but this being such a big game means we can’t dwell on losing to Oldham. Our performances have been good recently so out morale won’t be affected by what happened on Tuesday night. I would like to think everyone took the positives out of it. There is a feeling among the lads that things are turning round. No-one is falling out and saying things like, ‘You didn’t do this or that’. It shows everyone is together.”

“I think the fans can also see how we are working for each other. They were brilliant at Oldham and their support will be very important this weekend. Since I came to the club, they have been great. I have had a few clubs and they are definitely one of the best I have witnessed.”

Davies will hope he can give the City fans something to cheer about this weekend of course. The game with Plymouth gets underway at 3pm on Saturday afternoon. If the Bantams can win this one, they can go into the Christmas period on a positive note. Transfer betting then suggests they might do some business in January too. For now though, it is all about Saturday’s massive game.

Phil Parkinson on the Oldham Athletic defeat

City boss Parkinson, had the following to say on the club website: “I thought in the first half we played very well. The goal in the second half has changed the game. That goal has given them a lift and unfortunately we didn’t respond to it as well we could have done. Missing the penalty towards the end wasn’t ideal. If that goes in then you never know with injury time coming up, but I know that Craig will be gutted to have missed it so we can’t blame him too much.”

“I thought in the first half, against a good side, we stood up to them. We were missing a fair few players for one reason or another tonight but I think they may have been surprised by us. We said before the game that we had worked hard to get to this stage of the competition, so we were keen to keep our good run up, but equally we were also keen to build on last Saturday’s performance in the F.A Cup.”

“It was important that we put in another performance in tonight, and I thought we were very good in the first forty-five minutes. We were very competitive in what was a fast and furious cup tie.”

Oldham Athletic 2 – Bradford City 0

City went down 2-0 to League One side Oldham Athletic in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern area semi-finals. Kuqi blazed over an early chance before Latics goalkeeper Alex Cisak was forced to save well from James Hanson. Josh Parker went close for Paul Dickov’s side and two openings were wasted before the break as Luca Scapuzzi volleyed off target and then shot straight at Jon McLaughlin.

The breakthrough came in the 61st minute when Scapuzzi cut in from the left and former Bantams loanee Tom Adeyemi took over on the edge of the box, skipping past two challenges and slotting home from 10 yards. Substitute Ross Hannah tested Cisak, but only fine goalkeeping from McLaughlin denied Kuqi at point-blank range. There was no stopping Kuqi 10 minutes from time, though, as he sealed the Bantams’ fate with an unstoppable six-yard header from Robbie Simpson’s right-wing free-kick. Craig Fagan slammed a 90th-minute penalty high and wide after defender Jean Yves Mvoto was punished for handball.

Former Bantam Donovan Ricketts joins MLS side Montreal Impact

The Los Angeles Galaxy announced on Monday that they have traded former Bantams keeper Donovan Ricketts to MLS new boys Montreal Impact for allocation money.

34-year-old Ricketts joined Bradford City on a one-year loan-deal from Jamaican side Village United back in July 2004 but it was nine months before he even got a game due to the form of Aussie Paul Henderson and work permit problems. The move was made permanent in May 2005 when he signed a two-year deal to keep him at Valley Parade. Ricketts nearly moved to QPR in January 2008 but the deal fell though as he was refused a work permit. He was eventually released by City in April 2008, once again it’s was due to work permit problems so the big keeper returned to Jamaica.

Then out of the blue he joined David Beckham at LA Galaxy in December 2008.  In three seasons in Los Angeles, he played and started 70 games, logged 6,168 minutes and recorded 27 shutouts, including a club-record 11 in 2010 when he was voted MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. (Americans love their pointless stats!)

Phil Parkinson on the AFC Wimbledon Victory

The City boss had the following to say on the club website: “I am very pleased to be in the hat for the third round draw. We said that we wanted to be in it so that we could sit back and enjoy the draw, and now we can do that. Lets just hope that we get our reward with a big tie and a game that we can look forward to.”

“I’d prefer a home draw now. It would be great to get one of the big guns here at home. I feel we would deserve it if that were to happen because Wimbledon are a tough side to beat. They give you a problem with the system they play, but I thought we put in a disciplined performance without the ball today. I remember when we played them at home here last time, we spoke afterwards about doing well with the ball but not doing good enough without it. Today we got both parts right.”

“I thought the start was important. To get two early goals was great. We conceded a goal at the start of the second half – I’m never happy when we do that – but I was pleased with the fact that we went again after that. We had another go at them and had a couple of decent moments before we got our penalty. Craig (Fagan) has stuck it away well and that has given us the cushion that you are after. We said to the lads at half-time that we wanted a ruthless, professional performance, and that is what they gave us.”
