Notts County 0 – Bradford City 1

James Hanson’s stunning extra-time strike gave the Bantams 1-0 victory over League One side Notts County in the first round of the Capital One Cup at Meadow Lane. The best chances of a tentative first half fell to County, with an Alan Judge cross-shot just being diverted towards the net by Yoann Arquin, only for Matt Duke to somehow kept it out. Duke was at full stretch again moments later when Alan Sheehan’s left-foot drive was foiled before the County left-back planted the follow-up inches over the bar.

In injury time following a poor second half, Lee Hughes’ shot was parried by Duke and Arquin incredibly hit the rebound on to the bar from three yards out. The home side were made to pay in extra time as poor defending by the Magpies on the edge of their own box saw the ball fall to Hanson, who curled into the top corner from 20 yards. Seven of Phil Parkinson’s new signings were involved in the game: Stephen Darby, James Meredith, Rory McArdle, Gary Jones, Alan Connell and Garry Thompson were in the starting line-up, plus Nathan Doyle came on as a substitute in extra time.

CITY: Duke, Darby, Oliver, McArdle, Meredith, Thompson (Baker, 74), Atkinson, Jones, Reid (Doyle, 105), Connell (Wells, 61), Hanson. Subs not used: McLaughlin, Hannah, Brown, Bass.
